Bild & perceptions lab / Leonardo da Vinci and Spatial Effects (3D perception) in Paintings
Welcome to a guest lecture with Prof. Kim Veltman from Virtual Maastricht McLuhan InstituteLeonardo da Vinci's interest in spatial effects was inspired partly by new trends in painting practice among his contemporaries:e.g.Mantegna, Jan van Eyck. His early research into linear perspective convinced him that the vanishing points of geometrical objects were problematic. Hence, his later paintings focused on effects of light and shade (chiaroscuro) on human forms. When he moved to Milan c. 1482 he began to study optics and perspective, which led to preliminary treatises (Ms. A - C, 1490-1492) and culminating in later manuscripts (e.g. Mss. E-F, 1513-1515) and plans for a Treatise on Painting, which his student Francesco Melzi later compiled.
